Tolerance is the “willingness to accept behaviour and beliefs that are different from your own” (from the Cambridge dictionary). On the international day for tolerance, awareness about tolerance of different cultures and different beliefs within the society is spread, and public awareness regarding the negatives of intolerance is brought up. In 1994, UNESCO celebrated the 125th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which led the UN to declare and mark this day as the International day of Tolerance. Mahatma Gandhi’s beliefs on non-violence and tolerance has influenced the creation of this annual observance day. The idea of tolerance revolves around the United Nations Charter, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The United Nations Charter was a treaty signed on June 26, 1945 in San Francisco, and is considered as the consecutive instrument for the United Nations.
